It's here! Dropbox for Linux is finally available and ready for your everyday use.
We recommend you download the "x86" package for your distribution from the list below.
If your distribution is not listed above, or compatible with one listed
above, download the source and read the readme file for instructions.

After installing the package you must
restart Nautilus. You can do that by issuing the following command
(note: if you're running compiz, doing so may lock up your computer -
log out and log back in instead):
$ killall nautilus

System Requirements:
Dropbox is supported on x86 and x86_64 versions of Ubuntu 8.04, Ubuntu 7.10, and Fedora Core 9. There have
also been reports of users getting Dropbox to work on different versions of Gentoo, Arch Linux, OpenSUSE,
and Debian. If you are having trouble getting Dropbox to run on your Linux system check if you
have the following software dependencies installed:
- GTK 2.12 or higher
- GLib 2.14 or higher
- Nautilus 2.16 or higher
- Libnotify 0.4.4 or higher
- Wget 1.10 or higher
How does it work?
Currently Dropbox for Linux consists of two major components. dropboxd is a per-user
closed-source daemon process that makes sure your $HOME/Dropbox directory
is properly synchronized with your other computers and our secure backend.
nautilus-dropbox is a GPL'd
Nautilus plugin that connects to
dropboxd (via a pair of Unix domain sockets) and presents a GUI based on the
information dropboxd provides. You guessed right, GPL means nautilus-dropbox
is open source, and it's
free software!
There is nothing special about nautilus-dropbox. Indeed, any client process
who follows the dropboxd protocol can implement a UI for Dropbox. The protocol
is a very simple RPC-like UTF8 string based protocol. As of now there is no formal documentation
on this protocol but you can always read the nautilus-dropbox source :) That's why
it's open! Perhaps write your own command line interface, or a KDE
interface.
Is there an Ubuntu repository?
Yes! We have an unauthenticated repository for Ubuntu 8.10, 8.04, and 7.10.
For Ubuntu 8.10, add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list or equivalent:
deb http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu intrepid main
For Ubuntu 8.04 you might want to add these lines instead:
deb http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu hardy main
And for Ubuntu 7.10, add these lines:
deb http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu gutsy main

patches verbatim into our release if you file a copyright assignment to Evenflow, Inc.
Alternatively, you can release your patch into the public domain, that allows us
to sidestep all legal issues. Don't worry we'll still credit you in our CONTRIBUTORS
file :)

데이터를 백업하고 동기화 하는 프로그램이 여럿 있지만.. 사실 Dropbox
만큼 편리한 솔루션은 드문것 같습니다. 윈도우/맥/리눅스 어디에서나 쓸 수 있고, 그냥 탐색기 쓰던것 처럼 Dropbox 폴더에
원하는 파일만 넣어두면.. 자동으로 인터넷을 통해 백업과 동기화 되니 진짜 너무 너무 편리합니다. 게다가 단순한 백업 용도 외에
이 Dropbox를 이용해 자주 쓰는 프로그램의 중요 데이터를 동기화 시키도록 만들면, 어느 컴퓨터에서나 기존에 쓰던 그대로의
상태로 쓸 수 있기 때문에 정말 환상적이네요.
이미 나온지 한참 된 서비스라 뒷북 느낌의 포스팅이지만.. 아직까지
Dropbox를 한번도 안써보셨거나 그냥 단순 백업용도로만 쓰시다가 삭제하신 분들에게 이 프로그램이 얼마나 우수한지 다시 한번
그 진가를 공유하고 싶어서 작성합니다.. –_-;
(현재 Dropbox는 9월달에 클로즈베타를 끝내고 완전히
공개됐으니 누구나 다운로드 받아 사용 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 원래는 2GB 무료용량을 제공하는줄 알았는데, 제 계정을 보니
어느새 5GB로 나와있네요. 공식적으로 용량 제공이 늘어났는지는 여부는 확인 못했습니다.)
1. 일단 동기화가 필요한 각각의 컴퓨터에 Dropbox를 설치합니다. Dropbox의 설치와 간단한 설정법, 그리고 웹인터페이스를 이용하는 방법은 여기 weidlove님의 블로그에 자세히 나와있으니 먼저 참고해 주시고요.

2. 이제 자주 사용하는 애플리케이션의 데이터를 Dropbox 폴더로 복사하고 데이터 저장위치도 여기에 지정해줍니다. 여기서는 로보폼 패스워드 데이터를 예로 들었지만, 굳이 로보폼이 아니더라도 맥이나 리눅스 유저라면 KeePass 데이터베이스 파일을 지정하면 되겠고.. 아무튼 데이터 경로를 직접 지정 할 수 있는 프로그램이라면 어느것이나 가능하겠죠. 개인적으로 파이어폭스의 스크랩북 데이터와 GTD 기반의 할 일 관리 프로그램인 라이프매니저의 백업 파일, 그리고 몇가지 포터블 프로그램과 문서파일을 집과 사무실의 모든 컴퓨터에 공유시키고 편리하게 사용중입니다.. ^_^

파일 복사가 끝나고 잠시 기다리시면 드랍박스가 설치된 다른 컴퓨터에도 동일한 폴더가 만들어지고 인터넷을 통해 자동으로 데이터가
동기화됩니다. 이제 이 컴퓨터에서 로보폼 데이터의 저장 위치를 방금 만들어진 Dropbox 폴더로 지정하면 두개의 컴퓨터에서
동일한 로보폼 데이터를 쓸 수 있겠죠. 어느 한 컴퓨터에서 다른 비밀번호를 저장해 새로운 데이터 파일이 만들어지거나 필요 업는
데이터를 삭제하면 다른 컴퓨터에도 Dropbox를 통해 즉각적으로 반영이 됩니다.. :)
4. 물론 Dropbox 웹사이트를 통해서도 동기화 되는 데이터에 접근 할 수 있으며, 어떤 파일이 동기화 되었는지를 한눈에 파악 할 수 있습니다.
5. Dropbox 유저가 아니어도 파일 공유가 가능한데요. Public 폴더에 파일을 넣고 Copy public link로 주소를 복사해서 이메일이나 메신저로 알려주면, 웹으로 바로 접근해서 받을수 있습니다.

인적으로 베타때부터 지금까지 몇개월간 사용해 왔지만 잘못된 동기화로 일어나는 파일 덮어쓰기나 버전 충돌 같은 경우는 아직까지
한번도 못겪어 봤습니다. 그만큼 안정적이고 효율적인 메커니즘을 구현했다고 할 수 있겠는데요. 다만 국내 서비스가 아닌만큼 전송
속도면에서 좀 부족하고, 아직까지는 Dropbox 자체 폴더에 있는 파일들만 동기화 할 수 있는게 조금 아쉬운점이라 할 수
있겠네요.
(이 문제는 심볼릭 링크를 이용해 어느정도 해결 할 수 있고, 이런 기능이 없는 윈도우 XP의 경우도 Link Shell 유틸리티를 사용하면 가능합니다. 링크 개념 이해가 어렵다면 마이크로소프트의 SyncToy 같은 유틸리티로 로컬컴퓨터나 내부 네트워크 동기화를 Dropbox 폴더와 연동하면 되겠네요. 아니면 Dropbox와 비슷하지만 아무 폴더에서나 동기화가 가능한 Syncplicity 서비스를 사용하면 된다는데, 이건 안써봐서 잘 모르겠습니다.. –_-; )
